According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Established 60 years ago, these words form the basic premise of international human rights law. However, injustices against human-kind still occur around the world and media reporting on certain details can be risky. The United Nations encourages that all human rights work be viewed through the non-discrimination lens, where discrimination on the basis of race, colour, gender, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, disability, property, birth or other status is prohibited. The 2010 Olympic Winter Games may see the absence of the women’s ski jumping team. That is due to the fact that in 2006 the International Olympic Committee voted to not include women’s ski jumping at the 2010 Games because the sport was considered to be not developed enough at the time. The team is still fighting to have the sport included in the upcoming games, and have recently sought to take their case to the Supreme Court of Canada. This case touches on many issues including women’s rights, equality, international law, and sovereignty. What are your thoughts on the issue? Have your say on our discussion forum. Every year thousands of people leave their home countries. Some of them leave voluntarily in search of a better life for themselves and their families. Others, displaced by natural disasters, famines or war, are forced to migrate. In observation of International Migrants Day on December 18, we invite you to contribute to our Panorama issue on Forced Migration and check out other articles on the issue.
